To turn positioning into art direction, translate the strategic distinction into visible relationships: what appears, how it is arranged, what it is made of, and what is deliberately absent. Keep the translation inspectable. “Confident,” “human” and “precise” can help frame a conversation, but they do not tell an image maker what to make.
The useful deliverable is a small set of decisions that can produce more than one image. A strong reference image can open the territory. It cannot define every future crop, subject and application. The translation and commissioning sheet turns that territory into a working brief.
Start with a distinction the image can carry
Kickbrand is the strategy, marketing and customer-experience practice run by the same team as Blankout. Its public proposition connects a brand's promise with the experience people have. Its existing image world uses mineral planes, measured intervals and connections. These are source materials we can inspect; they do not establish how an audience reacted to them.
For this Note, consider the relationship between two planes. A seam makes a distance visible. A connecting element gives that distance a direction: the image is about the relationship between the parts, rather than a collection of attractive objects. That is a useful translation of the proposition because it gives composition a specific responsibility.
This is our reading of the published work, not a reconstruction of every conversation that led to it. A persuasive explanation written later should not pretend to be the original team's documented decision sequence.
A proposition made visible

| Input | Visual consequence | Exclude |
|---|---|---|
| Promise meets experience | A seam and a purposeful connection between planes. | Unrelated floating fragments that remove the connection. |
| A clear relationship | Few large elements; an interval the eye can inspect. | Extra symbols competing for equal attention. |
| Repeatable character | Specify subject relationships before surface treatment. | Copying the exact same crop for every image. |
Write consequences and exclusions together
For every chosen property, write what it makes possible and what would undermine it. If the image depends on a precise relationship, adding several unrelated fragments may weaken it. If the material should feel stable and substantial, a weightless glossy surface might change the meaning. Those are hypotheses to test in a composition, not universal rules about materials.
Our board contrasts a deliberate connection with detached floating blocks. The second panel is a newly constructed explanatory alternative. It is not a rejected Kickbrand campaign or a recovered design artifact. The comparison isolates one choice: whether the composition gives the connection an observable job.
Exclusions protect the premise without freezing the result. “Do not add an arbitrary second metaphor” leaves room for a different camera, scale or material. “Always use this exact rectangle at this coordinate” may prevent variation the series needs. Write constraints at the level where meaning lives.
Translate into a whole frame
Subject, composition, material and light work together. A strong material can become decorative if the arrangement has no reason. A precise arrangement can feel lifeless if the lighting erases its depth. Typography can introduce another voice even when the images are consistent.
In a commissioning board, give each of these a concise instruction. For the connection example: two substantial planes; an inspectable interval; a deliberate joining element; light that preserves the seam; enough quiet area for a caption. Then name the placement. A wide project opening and a narrow card need different room around the same important relationship.
Keep image typography under separate control when accuracy matters. A brand mark or interface label should come from its actual source, rather than being redrawn inside a generated scene. This gives the team a reliable place to correct spelling, scale and spacing without remaking the whole picture.
Review a small set of real applications
Before expanding a visual language, ask for one demanding crop and one ordinary use. Review them beside the surrounding content. Does the relationship still read at card size? Can a caption sit beside the image without competing with its most important element? Does a new subject belong to the same family without becoming the same picture?
Keep the comparison at the fidelity of the decision. A native geometric drawing is enough to inspect the main construction. Material questions may need a rendered or photographed study. A browser placement is necessary when the important constraint is a responsive crop. Making all three at the start is useful only when all three questions are open.
The image-series Note follows this principle through our own project covers. It records what stayed fixed and what changed. The image-method guide handles a different decision: whether a given job calls for capture, illustration, generation or a combination.
Give the next maker a decision, not just a mood
A handover should let another maker explain why an image belongs. Include the strategic distinction, the image's job, the visual rules, the exclusions, source references and the important placements. Name who can approve departures when a new subject does not fit.
If the proposition itself is unresolved, clarify it before asking imagery to conceal the gap. Kickbrand handles that strategic work; Blankout's art-direction practice develops the visible system. The two responsibilities connect, while each can be commissioned independently.
